Yeah…sorry.

GOAL: Post every day

grace-note – okay to miss three days a month

Objective:  Stick (loosely) to the schedule.

  • I posted a loose schedule a few months ago that has worked pretty well

Objective:  Make my blog known

  • Post on “hot topics” that will attract search engines
  • Post comments on other blogs that I already read and enjoy, although through my blog reader.

Objective:  Make my blog “worth it”

  • Use MzEllen.com to blog my way through books, devotionals, podcasts and life.

(thank you)

And wordpress 2.9 is pretty slick.

Well of course!  If there are too many books on the conservative best seller lists…give them their own list!  (That way they’re not competing with the liberals…)

In a Nov. 9 entry on The Huffington Post that laments Fox News host Glenn Beck pulling a feat not done before – holding the number one spot on The New York Times’ four lists: hardcover fiction, hardcover non-fiction, paperback non-fiction and children’s – they suggest a separate category altogether, not for political non-fiction, but conservative non-fiction.

Coworkers told police that Hamid’s actions were out of the ordinary and that he had worked at the kiosk for years. (…) Through an interpreter, Hamid requested a public defender and was scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Thursday where he is expected to enter a plea.

What’s up with that?  He’s been working at a mall in California for YEARS…and needs an interpreter to ask for an attorney?

2009:

President Barack Obama recently told ABC News’ Jake Tapper that he shares Pelosi’s belief that jail time is an appropriate punishment for not buying health insurance.

2008

And I think that it is important for us to recognize that if, in fact, you are going to mandate the purchase of insurance and it’s not affordable, then there’s going to have to be some enforcement mechanism that the government uses. And they may charge people who already don’t have health care fines, or have to take it out of their paychecks. And that, I don’t think, is helping those without health insurance.

and Pelosi dodges…

Egalitarianism and Homosexuality:  Connected or Autonomous Ideologies?

Evangelical Christian organizations that hold to a complementarian view of gender roles, such as The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW), have expressed concern over a possible connection between an egalitarian view of male/female gender roles and homosexuality. For example, in the list of central concerns stated in Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood-perhaps the most thorough defense of complementarianism-the authors declare, “We are concerned not merely with the behavior roles of men and women, but also with the underlying nature of manhood and womanhood themselves.

Why I Think Women Need to Study Theology

I have a confession to make.  I am not fond of women’s ministry programs.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my sisters in Christ and enjoy fellowshipping with them.  But programs that involve some type of teaching, such as workshops or conferences, generally don’t appeal to me.  Why?  In my experience, gatherings to hear teaching have been little more than encouragement sessions to make us feel better about being “God’s women”.  Unfortunately, I find the same thing on women’s blogs, even ones that have been advertised as a place for serious thinkers.  There are a few exceptions, but generally, I find them lacking in rich theological substance.

The Health Care Scavenger Hunt

By now, you probably know that House Democrats’ public plan for health reform will threaten your health care choices. But did you know that most members of the House haven’t even read the bill? Well, here at HandsOffMyHealth, we’ve read the 1,000-page plan. And we’ve learned that the House’s vision for “reform” irresponsibly adds more government to health care.

And…a recipe for grain-free almond crackers.

Fit Friday…

EDIT:  this is my weight loss graph from 6/5/09 – 8/28/09 (yes, the numbers are removed)

I’ve been exercising and I’ve had really good low-carb/low glycemic days.

My weight it stuck. I do tend to have plateaus about every 15-20 pounds so I’m 5 pounds overdue.  I’m maintaining so that’s good.

Okay…I pre-posted a couple of days ago so the recipe would be up…and my got knocked off the plateau.

My weight this morning was 6.2 pounds less than the Friday before we left on vacation (2 weeks ago) and 5.4 pounds less than the day we left.

Here’s a morning smoothie I’ve been making

(yes…I blend the watermelon rind in with the smoothie…there are a lot of vitamins and fiber in that rind.  I threw in a little hidden veggie and it doesn’t effect the taste at all.  I don’t add sweetener because that’s in the fiber drink powder.

Fit Friday…

started on 8/14…updated whenever.  The day that this will post I’ll be camping.  I don’t know if I’ll be able to update weight, etc.

This week is going to be a rough week…A month ago I became “single” (can you say “HELL”?)  This week the first eagle leaves the nest.  Whatever bird you use to describe the second…that will come next week.  So this is “neener, neener, neener.  Nobody wants you, you’re single and even your kids are gone” week.

recipe:  Simple Celery and Almond Salad

ingredients:

1 bunch (12-15 stalks) celery, plus leaves
1 cup sliced or slivered almonds
1/4 cup olive oil
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/4 cup roughly chopped parsley
salt and pepper

Directions:

  • Chop the celery and toss with almonds.
  • whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper.
  • drizzle over celery and almonds

serves about 4

It will be very easy to scale it down…although for camping it would make a good evening bite to eat – just toss the celery and almonds into individual baggies – and add the parsley so it doesn’t get icky in the dressing and take the dressing in a sealed container.

I’ll put that together this afternoon.

The Road Not Chosen.  (I read this in google’s blog feed…a blog well worth reading.)

from the dictionary

Ruthless (def) without pity or compassion; cruel; merciless. (That is the dictionary definition. I didn’t make it up to push a political point.)

Pragmatism (def) a philosophical movement or system having various forms, but generally stressing practical consequences as constituting the essential criterion in determining meaning, truth, or value.

From President Obama

(…)What I’ve been constantly searching for is a ruthless pragmatism when it comes to economic policy(…)

The author says,

When I read this today I thought of the Roman Christians in 165AD. When plague swept the country, the Roman’s, who thought illness was caused by evil spirits,  left the sick to fend for themselves, not wanting to risk the spirits attacking them. While this is an understandable human response during that time, the Christians had other ideas. They took care of the sick and dying. They were more concerned with treating people with dignity and compassion, risking death themselves, rather than going the “ruthlessly pragmatic” way of the Romans.

None of us, even the Congress or the President, really knows what the consequences of the Health Care bill will end up being. No one knows what form it will eventually take. No matter what happens we have to remember that as Christians we are called to follow the example of Christ in all we do. The Church today could do a much better job caring for today’s infirm and dying. Perhaps we should be practically showing compassion now so that if things get more dire, we will be experienced at meeting the needs of a sick and dying humanity.

and a facebook app (a helpful one…really)

This is where you can upload a photo and they will send you a “virtual weightloss” photo to help you visualize what you’ll look like when you weigh a few pounds less.

Frustrated

frickin lovely. (update, by the way)

there is no “visual editor” – it says visual, but it’s html. If I click on HTML, the editor box closes. And it STINKING DOESN’T COME BACK.

If I follow the upgrade directions, it screws my blog (I’d love to use stronger language…here in my office, I am.)

I don’t even know if THIS will work

I’m just going to put ALL of the files back and see what happens then

~~~
Ok…I backed up MzEllen using WinSCP to my desktop.  Then I updated wordpress.  It screwed my website.  REALLY BAD.
So I backgraded to the old version, got my website back.
Downloaded PHPmyadmin for wordpress (it’s a plugin), installed it and tried to run it.
I don’t know where the backup goes. Ok…got the backup sql file on my desktop.
What happens if the upgrade loses my posts?  Can I just use the same backup that I grabbed this morning and put the old version of wordpress up?  Or just replace the .sql (which does not have the same name as the one in the WinSCP window.
I think I read that the new wordpress version has automatic backups and upgrades.  That would be a good thing.
SCREW IT.  I’m leaving it for now.
Ok…I have to add a few words.  These are my new shoes.  Vibram Five Fingers shoes.  The reviews are great (for those who fit the shoes and I do).  They feel like I’m walking barefoot!  And that was the point.  AND…no shin splints.
(The law says that I have to wear shoes with toes while I’m on the work floor.  These qualiy, right?)
Fit Friday…
I’ve been walking at least 1/2 hour a day – over an hour most days…
I’ve been limiting to around 60 grams of carb a day…
Down 5 pounds from last week (on Becky’s scale)
Fit Friday…
I’m down 13.4 pounds since June 6 (18 days)
I’m walking, but not cycling.
I’m going to go to Meijer Garden today, to CC to fill out the loan app.
$825 Billion, and Not One Job May Result
“Can you tell me Mr. Barthold, how many jobs will be created as a result of this legislation?” Camp asked.  Barthold replied, “In short, Mr. Camp, I can’t.”  Camp then pressed Barthold to clarify his position, “So we don’t have an estimate of the number of jobs this would create either private sector or public?  We don’t have any estimate of the economic effect that this legislation would have on our economy, whether it would create any growth in our economy at all?  We don’t have that data before the committee today?”  Barthold then nodded his head and shrugged.
But, thanks to the simple phrase slipped into the legislation, the new “stimulus” bill abolishes the limits on the amount of federal money for the so-called Emergency Fund, which ships welfare cash to states.
From CBMW’s “Gender Blog“:
“Florida Conservatives Fighting Transgender Restroom Law”
The Associated Press calls it a “dark ad,” but Florida conservatives are trying to show the potential fallout of transgender anti-discrimination law the city commission passed in Gainesville last year. The law allows “transgendered” people to use either a male or female restroom, the restroom of their choosing. The television advertisement, sponsored by Florida conservatives, shows a blonde girl heading into the women’s restroom from the playground. A scruffy man, lurking outside, rushes into the restroom behind her. The words, “Your City Commission Made This Legal.” The city commission approved the measure, 4-3, last year.
