Monthly Archives: August 2009

Ok...I have to add a few words.  These are my new shoes.  Vibram Five Fingers shoes.  The reviews are great (for those who fit the shoes and I do).  They feel like I'm walking barefoot!  And that was the point.  AND...no shin splints.

(The law says that I have to wear shoes with toes while I'm on the work floor.  These qualiy, right?)

He's officially in a dorm (actually, in an upper-classman apartment with a kitchenette and only one other person).

And he's officially on a meal plan (he has $700 for the semester to eat on)

He wants us to drive up together (or in a mini-convoy) on Tuesday.  That's okay...I can do that.  That's only a week from today.

Like this summer vacation was a "vacation" - more like survival camp.

At any rate, some time next week (either Tuesday or Thursday) I begin the empty nest process.  Driving a long way to take my oldest to his new university - Orientation is Wednesday and Thursday...then we have 3 days to camp.

I'm going to pre-post a few things, but it will be slow.

And the long drive (we drive in separate cars) with me and my own thoughts and the new Sovereign Grace music (I bought the Psalms CD also - which is available from iTunes)

I got this CD in the mail yesterday...I cried much of the way through. Very few CDs have I come across with the depth of the nature of who God is and His adoption of us as His own children.

For everybody who would rather have the death, burial and ressurection of Christ, the Son for the remission of sin - over "Jesus is my girlfriend" songs...

Try this.

The Prodigal

You held out your arms, I walked away
Insolent, I spurned your face
Squandering the gifts you gave to me
Holding close forbidden things...
Destitute, a rebel still, a fool in all my pride
The world I once enjoyed is death to me
No joy, no hope, no life.

Where now are the friends that I had bought
Gone with every penny lost
What hope could there be for such as I
Sold out to a world of lies
Oh! to see your face again, it seems so distant now
Could it be that you would take me back
A servant in your house

9 - What are you looking for in a life time mate?

Faithfulness.  Love.  A ministry partner.  A leader of the home.

10 - define "love" within a marriage

Love within a marriage is a little different than love between fellow human beings.

When you love your spouse, you love your own flesh.  You love the one whose body belongs to you.

For me (a woman), it means that I'll strive to submit to my husband as the church submits to Christ.

We share the same life, the same goals, the same will.

For him (whoever he may be), it means that he will strive to love me as Christ loves the church, giving himself up for her, washing her in the Word.

Listening now...

But first!  On my way home from my sister's house...I followed the sign:

Yes...this is the "White Horse Inn"

Now...the show.  (indented parts are what I took from the show, the left justified are my thoughts)

"this" generation is more narcissistic...because the world is more competitive...a little self-esteem is good...lots is better.

And yet, they also seem to be more adrift and "lost at sea" than any other generation.

Those who are truly successful are those who are humble, who get along with others, who are hard working and give their teams credit.

This is a good lesson for all of us to learn...be quick to praise, quick to recognize your own faults.  Play nice with others.

Narcissist don't think they have to study because they're already smart.

Having lived with a person with narcissistic tendencies...golly, he read and studied all the time (the better to show people up with)

Doubting yourself can make you work harder.

It can...or it can lead to despair.  I think it's a fine line.

anxiety and depression are higher than previous generations...focusing on yourself takes away from focusing on others.

Strangely, this generation also grew up with "forced volunteerism" in school - community service for a grade.  It seems that being made to do good works isn't effective.

A few evenings ago at my sister's house (I was sleeping in the finished basement) I was startled by a very large bat.  It flew into the enclosed laundry area so I shut the door.  And we had not seen it since.

I talked to my sister about it and she likes the bat.

They've had a few in the basement and when her husband kills one of them, she starts seeing bugs in the basement.  When there's a bat, it eats the bugs.

She says, "Better the bat I can't see than the bugs I can see".

But then...I like bats.  Bats are the good guys.  One bat in one night will eat a whole grocery bag full of mosquitoes.

I left my mountain bike with my dad (along with Tom's bike helmet) - and the stipulation that he doesn't ride without the helmet.

the last time he rode a bike, this happened:

Admittedly...the problem was Dad doing something that shouldn't be done on a bike (the seat was too hard so he put a pillow on it...when the pillow slipped, so did he).

the bike I left has really fat stable tires, is an adult bike (unlike the one he fell off) and has a padded seat.
